CLARIN-CH to Host Inaugural Community Event on Open Research Data

University of Neuchâtel, 9 September 2024 — The Swiss branch of the European research infrastructure “Common Language Resources and Language Technology” (CLARIN-CH) is set to host its first community event focusing on the theme “Open Research Data: Challenges and Opportunities.” This landmark event aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among researchers, data management experts, and legal professionals to address the complexities of handling open research data.
The event, scheduled to take place at the University of Neuchâtel, will feature two main sessions designed to facilitate interactive and insightful exchanges among participants.
Data Pitches: Exploring Challenges and Opportunities
The first part of the day, "Data Pitches," invites researchers to present the challenges and opportunities they have encountered in managing their research data under Open Science principles. This session is a unique opportunity for presenters to receive constructive feedback from peers and domain experts, helping them refine their approaches to data management in open research contexts. Contributions are welcome even from those who have not yet collected data but wish to discuss potential challenges and opportunities in the future.
World Café: In-Depth Discussions with Experts
The second part of the event will adopt a "World Café" format, providing participants with an opportunity for more in-depth discussions with experts in various fields. The session will cover key topics, including data protection, legal aspects of data sharing, and technical issues related to data formats.
Notably, two representatives from the University of Zurich's Linguistic Research Infrastructure (LiRI), Gerold Schneider and Teodora Vukovic, will contribute their expertise on data formats and technical issues. Their participation underscores LiRI’s commitment to advancing open research data practices within the linguistic community.
The lineup of experts for the World Café includes:
- Brian Kleiner (FORS) – Data Protection
- Simone Mäder (UNIBAS) – Data Protection
- Suzanna Marazza (CCdigitallaw, USI) – Copyright and Legal Aspects
- Gerold Schneider (LiRI, UZH) – Data Formats and Technical Issues
- Teodora Vukovic (LiRI, UZH) – Data Formats and Technical Issues
- Christian Futter (UB UZH, Open Science Services and the Language Repository of Switzerland) – Data Storing and Sharing
The World Café format is designed to promote meaningful exchanges and collaborative brainstorming, enabling participants to explore practical solutions to the challenges highlighted during the data pitches.
Registration and Participation
Participation in the event is open to all, with or without a data pitch submission. Interested individuals are encouraged to register by 1 September 2024. The event is free of charge, and catering will be provided. However, participants are responsible for their travel expenses.
A Continuing Commitment to Open Research Data
This event marks the beginning of a series of annual meetings organized by CLARIN-CH to support the scientific community in navigating the complexities of open research data. By facilitating the exchange of ideas and fostering collaboration among researchers, data managers, and legal experts, CLARIN-CH aims to advance standards and practices around open research data and address the ethical and legal challenges involved in processing and sharing linguistic data.
